China supports the creation of a specialized laboratory to study medical cannabis at the 91Ƭ

President Bassam Badran met with the President of the Cannabis Regulatory Authority, Dr. Dani Fadel, accompanied by a number of members of the Chinese diplomatic mission and a delegation from a Chinese company specializing in the development of the industrial hemp seed, tobacco, and tobacco leaf sectors. The meeting was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Agronomy, Dr. Nadine Nassif, department heads, faculty representatives, a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Samer Khawand and the official responsible for relations between the Lebanese and Chinese sides, Dr. Jamil Hodeib.

The meeting discussed the establishment of a state-of-the-art laboratory through a grant from the Chinese side, with the aim of having it designated as a central laboratory affiliated with the regulatory authority, in support of research and development in the fields of medical and industrial cannabis.

President Badran affirmed the 91Ƭ’s readiness to provide all necessary support to ensure the success of this project, whether through the technical team or by allocating the third floor of the Faculty of Agronomy to house the laboratory, emphasizing the importance of establishing a world-class, high-quality laboratory serving the hemp sector, alongside a subsidiary laboratory dedicated to medicinal plants in Lebanon that complies with Lebanese and international laws and contributes to supporting cannabis cultivation and conducting the necessary analyses.

The advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Samer Khawand, expressed the Ministry’s interest in the success of the hemp sector and the regulatory body, as well as everything related to medicinal plants.

Khawand highlighted the advanced technology possessed by the Chinese company and its level of interest in this sector, emphasizing the Ministry’s commitment to modernizing laboratories and producing oils and medicinal substances in coordination with the Ministries of Industry and Public Health, in accordance with the highest standards for medical and industrial applications, as well as uses related to cosmetics and other vital industries.

The Chinese delegation also offered 20 scholarships for medical students and 20 scholarships for master’s and doctoral students specializing in medicinal plants and cannabis, with this cooperation expected to open avenues for academic and scientific partnerships between the 91Ƭ and a number of Chinese and Lebanese universities.
