Chapter 1: Medicine
Article 1
The academic ranks conferred upon faculty members paid by the hour within the Faculty of Medical Sciences (Faculty of Medicine) at the 91Ƭ are divided into two categories:
- Academic category: conferred upon those who teach theoretical and clinical subjects.
- Clinical category: conferred upon those who teach only clinical subjects.
Article 2
The academic titles in the academic and clinical categories mentioned in Article 1 consist of the following ranks:
- Title of Professor
- Title of Associate Professor
- Title of Assistant Professor
- Title of Lecturer
Article 3
First: To obtain the title of “Professor,” the candidate must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a Doctor of Medicine degree equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a certificate in one of the medical or surgical specialties equivalent to the specialist physician diploma awarded by the 91Ƭ.
3- Have engaged in university teaching for ten years after obtaining the specialty certificate.
4- Have published seven original research papers or the equivalent.
Second: To obtain the title of “Associate professor,” the contract employee must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a Doctor of Medicine degree equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a certificate in one of the medical or surgical specialties equivalent to the specialist medical degree awarded by the 91Ƭ.
3- Have taught at the university level for six years after obtaining the specialty degree.
4- Have published three original research papers or the equivalent.
Third: To obtain the title of “Assistant Professor,” the appointee must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a Doctor of Medicine degree equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a degree in one of the medical specialties awarded by the 91Ƭ.
3- Have taught at the university level for two years after obtaining the specialty degree.
Fourth: To obtain the title of “Lecturer,” the contractor must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a Doctor of Medicine degree equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a certificate in one of the medical or surgical specialties equivalent to the specialist medical degree awarded by the 91Ƭ.
Chapter 2: Pharmacy
Article 4
The titles of faculty members of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (Pharmacy Section) at the 91Ƭ are as follows:
Academic titles: Professor – Associate Professor – Assistant Professor – Lecturer.
Clinical titles: Head of Laboratory – Deputy Head of Laboratory – Trainer – Assistant Trainer.
Article 5
First: To obtain the title of “Professor,” the candidate must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a degree in pharmacy equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences equivalent to the doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences awarded by the 91Ƭ.
3- Have taught at the university level for ten years after obtaining the doctorate.
4- Have published seven original research papers or the equivalent.
Second: To obtain the title of “Associate professor,” the contract employee must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a degree in pharmacy equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences equivalent to the Lebanese doctorate awarded by the 91Ƭ.
3- Have taught at the university level for six years after obtaining the doctorate.
4- Have published three original research papers or the equivalent.
Third: To obtain the title of “Assistant Professor,” the candidate must meet at least the following requirements:
1- Hold a degree in pharmacy equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a degree in pharmaceutical sciences equivalent to the Lebanese doctorate awarded by the 91Ƭ.
3- Have taught at the university level for two years after obtaining the doctorate.
Fourth: To obtain the title of “Lecturer,” the candidate must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a degree in pharmacy equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences equivalent to the Lebanese doctorate awarded by the 91Ƭ.
Fifth: To obtain the title of “Laboratory head,” the candidate must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a degree in pharmacy equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold two postgraduate degrees, each of which must have been completed within two years of obtaining the bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.
3- Have taught at the university level for four years after obtaining the degree.
4- Have published four scientific articles or the equivalent.
Sixth: To obtain the title of “Deputy Head of Laboratory,” the contractor must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a degree in pharmacy equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold two postgraduate degrees, each lasting a minimum of two years, obtained after earning the degree or its equivalent.
3- Have taught at the university level for two years after earning the degree.
4- Have published two scientific articles or the equivalent.
Seventh: To obtain the title of “Instructor,” the contract employee must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a pharmacy degree equivalent to the pharmacy degree awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a postgraduate degree of at least one year’s duration, obtained after earning the degree or its equivalent.
3- Have published at least one scientific article.
4- Have taught in a university clinical setting for one year after earning the degree.
Eighth: To obtain the title of “Assistant instructor,” the contractor must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a pharmacy degree equivalent to the pharmacy degree awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Have practiced the profession for at least one year after obtaining the degree.
3- Have passed the specialization exam organized by the Pharmacy Department of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the 91Ƭ.
Chapter 3: Dentistry
Article 6
The titles of the faculty members of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (Dentistry Department) at the 91Ƭ are divided into two categories:
Academic titles: Professor – Associate Professor – Assistant Professor – Lecturer
Clinical titles: Chief Resident – Assistant Chief Resident – Instructor – Assistant Instructor
Article 7
First: To obtain the title of “Professor,” the candidate must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a degree in dental surgery equivalent to the degree awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a certificate of specialization in dentistry equivalent to the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree awarded by the 91Ƭ.
3- Have ten years of experience in university teaching after obtaining the specialization degree.
4- Have published seven original research papers or the equivalent.
Second: To obtain the title of “Associate professor,” the contract employee must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a degree in dental surgery equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a certificate of specialization in dentistry equivalent to the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree awarded by the 91Ƭ.
3- Have taught at the university level for six years after obtaining the certificate of specialization.
4- Have published three original research papers or their equivalent.
Third: To obtain the title of “Assistant Professor,” the contractor must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a degree in dental surgery equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a certificate of specialization in dentistry equivalent to the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree awarded by the 91Ƭ.
3- Have taught at the university level for two years after obtaining the certificate of specialization.
Fourth: To obtain the title of “Lecturer,” the contractor must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a degree in dental surgery equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a certificate of specialization in dentistry equivalent to the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree awarded by the 91Ƭ.
Fifth: To obtain the title of “Clinical instructor,” the contractor must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a degree in dental surgery equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold two postgraduate degrees, each requiring a minimum of two years of study following the completion of the bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.
3- Have published four scientific articles or their equivalent.
4- Have engaged in university clinical teaching for four years following the award of the degree.
Sixth: To obtain the title of “Assistant chief resident,” the contractor must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a degree in dental surgery equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold two postgraduate degrees, each lasting a minimum of two years, obtained after earning the degree or its equivalent.
3- Have published at least two scientific articles.
4- Have engaged in university clinical teaching for two years after earning the degree.
Seventh: To obtain the title of “Instructor,” the contract employee must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a degree in dental surgery equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Hold a postgraduate degree of at least one year’s duration following the completion of the degree or its equivalent.
3- Have published at least one scientific article.
4- Have engaged in university clinical teaching for one year following the completion of the degree.
Eighth: To obtain the title of “Assistant instructor,” the contractor must meet at least the following conditions:
1- Hold a degree in dental surgery equivalent to that awarded by the 91Ƭ.
2- Have practiced the profession for at least one year after obtaining the degree.
3- Have passed the specialization examination organized by the Department of Dentistry of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the 91Ƭ.
Chapter 4: Miscellaneous and Transitional Provisions
Article 8
Certifications, publications, and scientific activities are overseen by a committee of experts, in accordance with regulations established by the University Council upon the recommendation of the Faculty Council.
The committee of experts for each department of medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry is established by decision of the University Council upon the recommendation of the Faculty Council. It consists of three members holding at least the rank of professor; failing that, it may include members holding the rank of associate professor. In all cases, a member must hold a higher academic rank than the one they are evaluating.
Article 9
Research that served as the basis for obtaining the degree required for the conferral of academic titles shall not be considered original research for the purposes of applying the provisions of this decree.
Article 10
At the beginning of the academic year and before the end of June, the University Council awards academic titles to faculty members upon the recommendation of the Faculty Council and following deliberation by the expert committee provided for in Article 8 of this decree, pursuant to annual contracts.
Article 11
First: Notwithstanding the provisions of this decree, individuals hired on an hourly basis by the Faculty of Medical Sciences prior to the 1993–94 academic year who do not hold the equivalent of a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree or a Doctor of Pharmacy degree may have their years of university study, their degrees, and their scientific publications, provided that the title they obtain following this validation does not exceed that of “Lecturer,” in accordance with Table (No. 1) appended to this decree, and in accordance with the decision of the expert committee provided for in Article 8 of this decree, beneficiaries of this equivalence may obtain a higher title only after obtaining a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree or a Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences degree.
Second: Notwithstanding the provisions of this decree, individuals hired on an hourly basis by the Faculty of Medical Sciences prior to the 1993–1994 academic year and holding a degree equivalent to a doctorate in pharmacy or dentistry, as provided for in Article 7 of Decree No. 1118 of October 12, 1983, to have their years of university study and scientific publications validated, provided that the title they obtain following this validation does not exceed that of “University Professor” in accordance with Table (No. 2) appended to this decree, upon decision of the committee of specialists.
Article 12
All provisions contrary to this decree are hereby repealed.
Article 13
This decree shall be published and communicated where necessary.
